Common Automatic Gate Problems

What Is Your Gate Doing?

The symptom helps narrow down where to begin, but several different failures can create the same gate problem. That is why we diagnose the complete system instead of replacing parts based only on symptoms.

01

Gate Will Not Open

Power loss, batteries, controls, safety devices, operator failure or mechanical resistance can prevent opening.

02

Gate Will Not Close

Photo eyes, safety edges, loops, timers, limits and wiring problems can leave a gate stuck open.

03

Gate Stops Partway

Weak batteries, voltage loss, binding, limits or operator strain can interrupt travel.

04

Gate Opens Then Reverses

Safety devices, obstruction detection, mechanical resistance or control settings may be involved.

05

No Power

Breakers, wiring, transformers, batteries, charging systems or internal components may have failed.

06

Remote or Keypad Fails

Programming, receivers, wiring, access equipment or control-board problems can prevent commands from reaching the operator.

07

Gate Is Slow or Noisy

Hinges, rollers, tracks, chains, alignment, batteries or operator components can create excessive resistance.

08

Intermittent Operation

Loose connections, moisture, overheating, weak batteries or failing electronics can create problems that come and go.

Not sure what is wrong? Call 903-364-6364 and tell us what the gate is doing. We can start with the symptom and inspect the complete system.

Professional Gate Diagnostics

We Inspect More Than Just the Operator

A gate operator can appear defective when the actual problem is the gate, power supply, batteries, safety equipment or access controls. Our diagnostic process looks at the system as a whole.

Gate Movement

Hinges, rollers, tracks, alignment, drag and mechanical resistance.

Power System

AC input, solar, batteries, transformers and charging voltage.

Operator Controls

Boards, limits, relays, motor response, wiring and settings.

Safety Devices

Photo eyes, monitored edges and connected obstruction devices.

Access Equipment

Remotes, receivers, keypads, exit devices and vehicle detection.

System Interaction

We look for one failure causing another part of the system to misbehave.

Gate Power Diagnostics

Batteries, Solar and Charging Problems

Low voltage and charging failures can make a healthy operator look defective. We test the power system instead of assuming the batteries are the only problem.

Battery condition and voltage
Charging-system output
Solar-panel input
AC power and transformer output
Loose, damaged or corroded connections
Control-board charging faults
Excessive accessory power demand
Solar automatic gate operator system being serviced
Automatic gate keypad and access control system
Access & Safety Diagnostics

Sometimes the Operator Isn't the Problem

A keypad, receiver, photo eye, loop or other connected device can stop an otherwise functional gate from operating correctly.

Keypads

Codes, wiring, communication and control-input problems.

Remotes & Receivers

Range, programming, receiver and signal-response issues.

Photo Eyes

Alignment, wiring, damage, obstruction and communication faults.

Safety Edges

Connected edge equipment and related operator faults.

Vehicle Loops

Detection, free-exit and connected loop-control problems.

Access Controls

Connected entry devices and operator-control inputs.

Repair Before Replacing

A Failed Gate Does Not Always Need a New Operator

Batteries, charging systems, wiring, receivers, controls, safety devices and mechanical gate problems can often be repaired separately. We diagnose first and recommend replacement only when it makes more sense for the system.

Repair May Make Sense

When the operator is otherwise suitable for the gate and the failure involves serviceable components, power, controls or connected equipment.

Replacement May Make Sense

When equipment is severely damaged, obsolete, improperly sized, unreliable, or replacement parts and support are no longer practical.

What East Texas Customers Say About Dynamic Door Service

Automatic Gate Repair Questions

Gate Operator Repair FAQ

Why won't my automatic gate open or close?

Possible causes include low voltage, weak batteries, damaged wiring, control-board faults, limits, safety devices, access controls, operator problems or excessive resistance from the gate itself. A complete diagnostic inspection is needed to identify the actual cause.

Can my gate operator be repaired instead of replaced?

Many gate problems can be repaired without replacing the entire operator. Batteries, controls, wiring, receivers, safety equipment and other components may be repairable or replaceable separately.

Why will my gate open but not close?

A gate that opens but will not close may have a photo-eye, safety-edge, loop, limit, control-setting, access-device or wiring problem. Safety devices should not be permanently bypassed to make the gate operate.

Can weak batteries cause gate problems?

Yes. Weak batteries can contribute to slow movement, intermittent operation, incomplete cycles, resets or complete shutdown. The charging system should also be checked so the reason for low battery condition can be identified.

Do you repair solar-powered gate operators?

Yes. Solar gate diagnostics can include the batteries, panel input, charging system, wiring, operator settings and connected equipment.

Do you repair gate keypads and remotes?

Yes. We troubleshoot compatible keypads, remotes, receivers and connected access-control equipment as part of gate-system diagnostics.

Do you repair gate photo eyes and vehicle loops?

Yes. Photo eyes, safety equipment, vehicle-detection loops and free-exit devices can all affect gate operation and may need to be tested during diagnosis.

Do you repair both residential and commercial gates?

Yes. Dynamic Door Service works on residential driveway gates, ranch entrances, business gates, community entrances, storage facilities and other automatic gate applications.

What gate operator brands do you service?

We diagnose many gate operator brands including LiftMaster, DoorKing, USAutomatic, Apollo/Nice, Ghost Controls, Viking Access, Linear, FAAC, HySecurity and other systems. Repair options depend on model, age, condition and parts availability.

Where do you provide automatic gate repair?

Dynamic Door Service provides automatic gate operator repair in Gilmer, Longview, Pittsburg, Marshall and many surrounding East Texas communities. Call 903-364-6364 to confirm service availability for your property.
