Not all garage door springs are the same, and using the wrong replacement spring can damage your opener and void any warranty. Dynamic Door Service technicians are trained to identify, measure, and replace both major spring systems correctly the first time.
Torsion Springs
Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the garage door opening, wound around a steel shaft. They use torque — rotational force — to counterbalance the weight of the door as it opens and closes. Torsion springs are standard on most modern residential doors and virtually all commercial overhead doors. They tend to last longer, operate more quietly, and provide better balance than extension springs. A standard torsion spring is rated for approximately 10,000 cycles; high-cycle springs rated at 25,000–50,000 cycles are available and recommended for high-use doors.
Extension Springs
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door. They stretch (extend) when the door closes and contract when it opens, using stored energy to assist the lift. Extension springs are common on older single-car doors and lighter residential doors. Because they operate under significant tension along their full length, they require safety cables threaded through them — without these cables, a broken extension spring can become a dangerous projectile.

How to Know Your Spring Has Broken:
•You hear a loud bang from the garage (often described as a gunshot sound)
•The door feels extremely heavy when you try to lift it manually
•The door opens only 6 inches and stops (the opener's safety mechanism kicks in)
•The door hangs unevenly or one side sags
•You can see a visible gap or separation in the spring coil

The Dangers of DIY Spring Repair
Garage door springs are among the most dangerous components in any residential or commercial building.
A standard torsion spring stores between 150 and 300 foot-pounds of torque when fully wound. If that energy releases
suddenly — due to a slip, a wrong move, or a tool failure — the result can be a broken wrist, a fractured skull, or worse.
Emergency rooms see garage door spring injuries every year, and the majority involve homeowners
attempting DIY repairs. The tools required to safely wind and unwind torsion springs — proper winding bars,
a torque wrench, and clamps — are not items most homeowners own. Improvising with
screwdrivers or other substitutes is how catastrophic accidents happen.
Beyond the physical danger, an improperly installed spring can:
•Cause the door to slam shut unexpectedly
•Damage the opener motor by creating an unbalanced load
•Snap again prematurely because the tension was set incorrectly
•Void any warranty on your garage door or opener
Dynamic Door Service technicians carry the proper tools, wear appropriate safety equipment, and follow established
industry protocols on every job. The cost of a professional spring replacement is a fraction of what an emergency room visit —
or a destroyed opener — would cost you.
Preventative Maintenance for Longer Spring Life
The single best thing you can do to extend the life of your garage door springs is to lubricate them regularly.
Use a silicone-based spray or a dedicated garage door lubricant — never WD-40, which strips existing lubrication and
attracts dirt. Apply lubricant to the coils every 3–6 months, working it in by operating the door a few times after application.
Beyond lubrication, an annual professional inspection is the most cost-effective investment you can make in your garage door system.
During an inspection, a Dynamic Door technician will:
•Check spring tension and balance
•Inspect cables and drums for fraying or wear
•Test the opener's force settings and auto-reverse function
•Inspect all moving parts
•Identify any hardware approaching end of life
Catching a spring that is 80% worn is far less expensive than responding to an emergency call when it finally snaps —
especially if that happens on a Sunday evening when emergency rates apply.
